Geographical Indications in India - 2018 statistics

Review and Count on Geographical Indications Products in year 2018. 




West Bengal top the list as 06 products from this state received Geographical Indications Status, followed by Bihar with 05 GI tag Certifications.

In year 2018, total 25 Products from Agricultural , Handicrafts, Manufacturing & Food classifications received GI tag status.

Out of 25 products, 24 are from Indian Origin and 01 Product is from Italy.

Till date total 330 Products received Geographical Indications Stag status, and around 278 applications are pending before GI registry.

Hope 2019 will have more Geographical Indications Count along with Awareness initiatives by the GOI.

Garlic from Kodaikanal Secured GI Tag Status

Kodaikanal Malai Poondu is a garlic cultivated in Kodaikanal Hills of Dindugul District. Kodaikanal Malai Poondu - Garlic from the State of Tamil Nadu have secured Geographical Indications (GI) status on 30th July 2019.  Department of Biotechnology, Mother Teresa Women's University and  Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology, are the applicants for this Product.  Uniqueness as mentioned by the applicants :  Kodaikanal garlic is known for its medicinal properties and preservative properties.  The specialty of this Kodaikanal Malai Poondu lies in its extended storage life period of 8 to 11 months This is because the cloves of the garlic do not get separated for these months.  Kodaikanal garlic has an extraordinary strong smell and pungent taste. Geographical Indications Rules Amended in India

O n 28th August 2020, Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Amendment rules, 2020 have been notified by the Ministry of Commerce and Industries. As per the amended rules: application for the authorized user registration under a registered Geographical Indications can be” made by the Producer in Form GI-3”, which shall be accompanied by the statement of the case to establish how the applicant claims to be the producer of that partic ular registered Geographical Indications. Whereas previous rule states that “Application for the Authorized user “shall be made jointly by the registered proprietor and the proposed authorized user in Form GI-3”.
