Garlic from Kodaikanal Secured GI Tag Status



Kodaikanal Malai Poondu is a garlic cultivated in Kodaikanal Hills of Dindugul District.

Kodaikanal Malai Poondu - Garlic from the State of Tamil Nadu have secured Geographical Indications (GI) status on 30th July 2019. 

Department of Biotechnology, Mother Teresa Women's University and 
Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology, are the applicants for this Product. 

Uniqueness as mentioned by the applicants : 

Kodaikanal garlic is known for its medicinal properties and preservative properties. 

The specialty of this Kodaikanal Malai Poondu lies in its extended storage life period of 8 to 11 months This is because the cloves of the garlic do not get separated for these months. 

Kodaikanal garlic has an extraordinary strong smell and pungent taste.

The high content of organosulfur compounds is responsible for strong smell and pungent taste.

This reputation arises due to the soil condition, hill altitude and the climatic conditions prevailing in the regions of Kodaikanal.
