Cambodian Agricultural Product "Kampot Pepper" : First product to Get Geographical Indication protection under Lisbon Agreement

 

                                              



A "Pepper " Variety from the Combodia - Kampot Pepper, secured Geographical Indications tag status under WIPO's Lisbon Agreement as per the  statement released by the WIPO on 18th January 2021. 

The advantage of being registered under the Lisbon Agreement is - With one single application, we can protect Geographical Indications product in all the signatory counties of the Lisbon system. 

Interesting facts of the Kampot pepper:

1) In the year 2000, Kampot pepper secured its GI status domestically. 

2)  Black, red, white & green are the four varieties of Pepper grown in Kampot area. 

3) Pest control methods are mainly by natural means ,those are normally produced from local plants.

4) Pepper production in Cambodia is mentioned in documents as old as the reports of the Chinese explorer Tchéou Ta Kouan in the 13th century.

5) Specialty of the Product: It is strong but not “burning” pungency and it is having high aromatic intensity.
