Cambodian Agricultural Product "Kampot Pepper" : First product to Get Geographical Indication protection under Lisbon Agreement

                                                 A " Pepper " Variety from the Combodia - Kampot Pepper , secured Geographical Indications tag status under WIPO's Lisbon Agreement as per the  statement released by the WIPO on 18th January 2021.  The advantage of being registered under the Lisbon Agreement is - With one single application, we can protect Geographical Indications product in all the signatory counties of the Lisbon system.  Interesting facts of the Kampot pepper: 1) In the year 2000, Kampot pepper secured its GI status domestically.  2)  Black, red, white & green are the four varieties of Pepper grown in Kampot area.  3) Pest control methods are mainly by natural means ,those are normally produced from local plants. 4) Pepper production in Cambodia is mentioned in documents as old as the reports of the Chinese e...

Geographical Indications Rules Amended in India

O n 28th August 2020, Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Amendment rules, 2020 have been notified by the Ministry of Commerce and Industries. As per the amended rules: application for the authorized user registration under a registered Geographical Indications can be” made by the Producer in Form GI-3”, which shall be accompanied by the statement of the case to establish how the applicant claims to be the producer of that partic ular registered Geographical Indications. Whereas previous rule states that “Application for the Authorized user “shall be made jointly by the registered proprietor and the proposed authorized user in Form GI-3”. Three New Hanidcrafts and One textile Goods Secured Geographical Indicaions (GI)tag in India. Sohrai Painting from the state of Jharkhand,  Puttapaka Telia Rumal from the state of Telangana,  Tanjavur Pith works from the state of Tamilnadu,  Arumbavur Wood Carvings from the state of Tamilnadu.  Above are the four new registered Geographical Indications (GIs) of India, with this four New GIs total number of Registered Geographical Indications in India Raised to 370.

Kodaikanal Malai Poondu is a garlic cultivated in Kodaikanal Hills of Dindugul District. Sweet News : Odisha Rasagola -A New GI product of India

Odisha Rasagola  "Ra sagola" Food Stuff from the State of Odisha finally secured GI (Geographical Indications) Tag status in India on 29th July 2019 ,  "Odisha Rasagola" is the 345th Geographical Indication Product in India.  In the year 2017, there was a legal battle two states West Bengal and Odisha for "Rasagola" - an Indian syrupy dessert made from ball-shaped dumplings of Chhena.  The legal battle started in the year 2017 when "Banglar Rasogolla" secured GI Tag status, where Odisha failed to stop "Banglar Rasagolla" to get GI tag status. Odisha Decided to file New Geographical Indications application for protecting "Odisha Rasagola" and finally it succeeded in protecting Odisha Rasagola under Geographical Indications Protection.  Uniqueness: "Odishara Rasagola" is closely linked with Lord Jagarnath Culture.

In India as on June 2019, There are 344 registered GI products, which includes products from Handicrafts, Agriculture, Natural goods and Food Products, representing from all states.
