Review and Count on Geographical Indications Products in year 2018.  West Bengal top the list as 06 products from this state received Geographical Indications Status, followed by Bihar with 05 GI tag Certifications. In year 2018, total 25 Products from Agricultural , Handicrafts, Manufacturing & Food classifications received GI tag status. Out of 25 products, 24 are from Indian Origin and 0 1 Product is from Italy. Till date total 330 Products received Geographical Indications Stag status, and around 278 applications are pending before GI registry.  Maharashtra & Karnataka Together shares Kolapuri Chappal GI   Hope 2019 will have more Geographical Indications Count along with Awareness initiatives by the GOI.  By  Jnana Teja,  Mail: Geographicalindicationsblog@gmail.com                  

Geographical Indications Tag to Black figs from Turkey

                                                                                                    Image source: blackbursa.com Turkey's Black figs, grown in Bursa province received Geographical Indications Tag ,confirmed by the  Bursa Metropolitan Municipality on 4th Feb 2018.  Germany is the top consumer of the "BlackBursa", importing almost 6,000 tons. These figs are sweet in taste and deep blue purple color on outer side and inside it is pink in color.

About geographical indications and appellations of origin:  Geographical indications (GIs) and appellations of origin (AOs) are distinctive signs that inform consumers about the origin of a product and indicate that its special features are attributable essentially to its place of production. An AO implies that production, processing, and preparation take place within a defined geographical area and that the qualities and characteristics of a product derive exclusively or essentially from its geographical environment, including natural and human factors. To qualify for protection as an AO, the link with the place of origin must be stronger than that required for GI protection. While AOs and GIs are internationally accepted terms, countries use various terms within their national laws to provide the same or similar legal protection.
